The named "Umbrella flies" are due to the hook shape that is looks like umbrella. The hook is particularly and practically designed for the mayfly and caddis in the major dry fly patterns and could be realized much better silhouette than standard patterns. As shown in the picture, the Umbrella hook is cranked at 3-4mm behind from the hook eye and the fly is tied in the part of very short shank. The longer part of shank is into the water and it does effective to stabilize a fly as well as the anchor or keel. The under hackle hold the fly on the surface film.

Effects of Umbrella flies
1. When the fly touches on the water, it keeps a balance constantly without lay down or turn over.
2. It decreases a drag in the stream due to the fly geometry with the hook design.
3. It does not block the striking and hooking so that can be get a firm hooking and keeps to hold a fish even using barb less Umbrella hook.
4. It is easy to watch a fly when stays on the water and looks larger size but seems to be smaller size from a fish of view.
